Usual problems with these configurations involve DNS server access and the IP default route settings, and sorting that out usually involves wading through whatever combination of VPN client and VPN server software is involved, and whatever logs are available, and matching up what both ends expect. It's a slog figuring out what's wrong; through the logs and the error codes and whatnot.
PPTP is easier to work with, but is insecure. L2TP/IPSec is somewhat more complex, but is secure.
I usually prefer to set up the VPN server in the firewall box, and not on a server. Computers don't make very good routers, which is what ends up happening with some network configurations, including a host-based VPN server.
For an alternative approach, spool up a private VPS (cheap) on one of the major providers, and install and use Streisand or ilk.
